Lancaster
Lancaster - The honey coloured sandstone from which many of the older buildings are made gives the city a warm welcoming feel. Much of the city's Georgian architecture is beautifully intact, a legacy of Lancaster's days as a bustling port and there are many listed buildings here. The skyline is dominated by the Castle to one side and the Ashton Memorial, an edwardian folly which can be seen for miles around, to the other. On a site occupied by a fortress since Roman times, looking down over the city, sits Lancaster Castle and its neighbour the Priory Church of St Mary. The Castle has been used as a courthouse and a prison for centuries, and it was here that the Pendle witches were tried and sentenced to death at the infamous Lancaster Assizes. The tours are fascinating and you can even feel the terror of being locked in the dungeon - if only for a few moments! In complete contrast, The Ashton Memorial is situated in one of the most picturesque and peaceful spots in the city - Williamson Park. Overlooking the city, set within 54 acres of beautiful parkland, this Edwardian folly was built as a memorial to the Wife of of Lord Ashton, a wealthy local industrialist. Made of Portland stone with a copper dome, the spectacular view from its terraces takes in the Lake District, Morecambe Bay and the mountains. In the City centre most of the streets are pedestrianised, and you will find all the high street names and independent retailers you'd expect in a busy city. Little alleyways run off the main streets and you will find many charming shops and eateries here. There's a daily indoor market and a twice weekly traditional street market which takes place in Market Square and along Market Street. There is also many museums which are all well worth a visit. Lancaster City centre is 8 miles from Capernwray House.
